Great Tragedy Befalls Papa Roach; He Is Gone

Believe it or not, Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix still feels like his band and bands like Korn and Deftones will be “the next generation’s Metallicas.”

In a recent interview with 105.7 The Point, he doubled down on his previous comments, further explaining that he really wants his band to stand the test of time as a new age heavy metal front-runner.

“Oh, absolutely, man. I mean, Shinedown‘s in that as well. You know what I’m saying?! For sure. And I just feel like it’s a goal, right?

“I had this intention when I was a kid to become a rock star. And then once that happened, and once that started kind of happening, I was, like, ‘All right, now …’ ‘Cause we did a show with Stone Temple Pilots back in the day; it was like 2002. And I saw them do their setlist and it was just, like, all hits. And I was, like, ‘Now that’s what I’m going for. I wanna have a career, I wanna be a legacy artist.’

“Now we’re seeing Metallica out there just ripping it in the stadiums. They just had one of the biggest attendances at a stadium. You know what I’m saying? And so … that’s inspiring to us—not only to myself, but I’m sure to Jonathan Davis [of Korn] and the homies in Deftones or Brent [Smith] and the boys in Shinedown it’s like we see that happening and that’s where we see our bands in the next 15 to 20 years. And it’s, like, you’ve gotta have goals, right? And I’ve gotta dream big. That’s it. Whether I make it there or not, we’ll see, but that’s my goal.”

In all honesty, he’s not wrong for wanting what Metallica has. When you think about their legacy, every past and present member of that band is essentially immortal. They’re cemented in metal history. Oh, the fame and fortune is probably nice too.

As mentioned earlier, this isn’t the first time Shaddix equated Papa Roach and nu-metal as “the next Metallicas.” That instance happened during an interview with Lazer 103.3 in Des Moines, Iowa.

“We’re watching Metallica step into that Rolling Stones spot right now. And Foo Fighters are another one of those groups. And Korn, Papa Roach, Deftones, we’re like the next Metallicas You know what I mean? That’s it. We’re stepping into that spot now. It just comes to, I guess, being able to survive the treachery of this rock and roll life. And if you can do that and still continue to create good art and good music, then we can get into that space.”

We’re not sure even he actually believes any of that, but you have to applaud the confidence.
