Deep Purple Keyboardist Jon Lord’s Former Oxfordshire Home Lists for £8.5 Million
An Edwardian period house in Oxfordshire, which was the former home of late Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord in the 1980s, was listed for £8.5 million (US$11.2 million) on Wednesday.
The home, also known as Burntwood Hall, was the inspiration for the song “Burntwood,” which appeared on Lord’s solo album in 1982.
Today, Kate and Ian Gethin are the owners of the home. They paid a little over £5 million for the property in 2009, records show.
“The link with Jon Lord often provides an interesting talking point and we have seen photographs of him sitting at a piano in the drawing room,” Ms. Gethin said in a statement. “The piece of music he named after the house is instrumental and I think it really captures the spirit of the property and surrounding countryside. It was obviously an inspirational and relaxing place for him to live—as it has been for us and I’m sure will be for others.”
Built in 1905, the home sits on almost 10 acres surrounded by nature. The 15,551-square-foot residence features eight bedrooms, six bathrooms and several indoor entertainment spaces.
The ground floor features spacious living and lounging areas including a dining room with walnut floors and two towering 20-pane sash windows overlooking the garden, connected to the fully-equipped kitchen. On the same floor, there is a study with oak paneling, a gym and a game room with a pool table, a fireplace and a bar.
“Period features typical of the Edwardian era such as tall sash windows and high ceilings are perfectly complemented by modern touches including fully glazed doors and walls to maximize natural light, cedar cladding and polished concrete floors to provide an eclectic and exciting contrast,” property agent Hugh Maconochie of Savills said in a statement.
Upstairs are the bedrooms and two family bathrooms, with the primary suite at the center of the home with a private bathroom with two carrara marble vanity units, a shower and a freestanding bath. There is also a balcony with a hot tub connected to the primary suite.
An entertainment space occupies a floor of the home, with a bowling alley and a home cinema. However, the leisure facilities are not limited to the indoors in this property.
Outside, there is a swimming pool, an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven, a large lounging space with speakers, a cricket pavilion and a tennis court. The garden includes an orchard and vegetable garden with a greenhouse. Plus there’s wine storage, a technical hub and a plant room on the lower ground floor of the home.
“The current owners have undertaken a thorough and stylish programme of restoration and renovation, paying great attention to detail and creating a family home with extensive leisure facilities,” Mr. Maconochie said.
Lord, who died in 2012 at the age of 71, was a founding member of the hard rock band Deep Purple. The band sold 100 million albums and performed to more than 10 million people.
