Clayton Kershaw returning to Dodgerse

Clayton Kershaw has made his choice. He is staying with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to a person briefed on the negotiations.

After undergoing surgery in November to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder, Kershaw spent several months this offseason deciding between the Dodgers, the club with which he has spent his entire professional career, and the Texas Rangers, his hometown team.

Kershaw is still rehabbing from the procedure. He is hopeful he can return to the mound this summer. Pitching through his discomfort in 2023, he still produced a 2.46 ERA in 131 2/3 innings. His season ended on a sour note when the Arizona Diamondbacks tagged him for six runs in the first inning of his start in the National League Division Series.

Kershaw’s new contract has a player option for 2025, opening the possibility that 2024 is not his swan song and that he and Shohei Ohtani could share the 2025 rotation.

Clayton Kershaw looking to ‘prove to myself that I’m still good enough’

The Dodgers crashed out of the postseason in a three-game sweep, being kept out of the World Series for the third consecutive year despite another 100-victory performance in the regular season. The early exit only further incentivized a feverish pursuit of two-way phenom Ohtani, who has become the new face of the franchise.

Kershaw will rejoin a team that has been transformed during the winter. In December, the team signed Ohtani to a 10-year, $700 million contract, with deferrals that enticed the franchise to make other major acquisitions, like a $325 million contract for Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a $110 million extension for pitcher Tyler Glasnow and a $23.5 million one-year flier on outfielder Teoscar Hernández.
