How Matt Peet’s Wigan Warriors conquered the rugby league world……

Challenge Cup final: Matt Peet’s Wigan Warriors’ ascent to prominence in rugby league

Wigan Warriors held all four of the available trophies after defeating Warrington Wolves 18-8 in Saturday’s Challenge Cup final at Wembley; captain Liam Farrell and head coach Matt Peet gave an explanation of the club’s ascent to the top of rugby league.

Only three teams have ever succeeded in winning the league title, county championship, Challenge Cup, and county cup in the same season, making the idea of “All Four Cups” the ultimate goal in rugby league.

The records set by Hunslet in 1907–08, Huddersfield in 1914–15, and Swinton in 1927–28 will never be repeated due to the elimination of the county leagues and cups in 1970 and 1993, respectively. However, the closest thing from the summer era has proven to be almost as elusive.

Wigan Warriors under Matt Peet became the third team to hold every title available at the same time when they defeated Warrington Wolves 18-8 on Saturday to win the Betfred Challenge Cup at Wembley. Bradford Bulls and St Helens had won the treble in 2003 and 2006, respectively, before winning the World Club Challenge the following year.

It is a run of success rarely seen for the Cherry and Whites since the heady days of the 1980s and 1990s, and long-serving captain Liam Farrell has not experienced anything on this scale in his 14 years as a first-team player.

“We’ve got legends as players at our club in [assistant coaches] Tommy Leuluai and Sean O’Loughlin – they’ve never done anything like this,” Farrell, who now has 11 major honours to his name, said.
